Finally, the first major physical progress on our house building journey!

This week we have been working on clearing the right-of-way. Our forestry consultant asked us to clear the path prior to sending out our trees for bid so that the loggers could see the condition of the road prior to making a bid. We will meet the consultant again to discuss whether or not we will need several loads of stone on the road in order for the log trucks to access. We would rather wait on the stone until after the timber harvest, as the trucks aren't very graceful on road surfaces..

We have also removed a lot of the farm trash that was adjacent to the right-of-way. We’ve already had 18’ and 24’ trailer loads take away scrap metal and 2 truck/small trailer loads of general household garbage for the dump. We estimate that there are probably 3 more big trailer loads of scrap metal now that it is crushed up. We also had to get rid of about 12 car tires and 3 tractor tires - luckily the local auto shop let us set out the car tires with theirs for free, and someone picked up the tractor tires to use as equestrian training obstacles! Luckily none of the trash or junk removal has cost us anything but some time and labor.

We honestly could not have done this work without bringing in the big guns. Travis at Green Team Industries brought his 20-ton excavator with thumb and his track loader. These two machines make an incredible pair for clearing, it’s hard to even describe the amount of power they have (tossing around 5k+ lbs logs and stumps, pushing school bus-sized brush piles through the woods, etc.)⁣ The total cost for all this work was $3,250, and it was worth every penny!

Next step, logging!⁣

About Us: We are Alex and Elaina, a couple in our mid 20s who are currently living on the 3-acre farm in southern Pennsylvania where Alex grew up. We have a garden, backyard chickens, and build or fix anything that we need to. We still work corporate day jobs, but are working to eventually leave the 9-5 lifestyle in favor of a self-built, debt-free, homestead on 6 acres nearby.
Something that differentiates us from other channels is our transparency on the cost of our projects - there is usually a breakdown right in the description!

We upload a YouTube video every Saturday night at 7pm EST, and post daily on Instagram and Facebook @masondixonacres!
