The Misfits, one of punk rock’s most iconic and influential bands, have had a tumultuous history, especially regarding the relationship between original members Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only. After the band’s formation in 1977 and their groundbreaking contributions to the horror-punk genre, tensions led to Danzig’s departure in 1983. Over the decades, fans clamored for a reunion of the original lineup. Between 2002 and 2016, attempts to bring Danzig and Only back together became a rollercoaster of legal disputes, musical differences, and mounting anticipation.

In 2002, a legal battle over the Misfits' name and merchandise rights between Danzig and Only was resolved in Only’s favor. This fueled years of animosity but left fans hopeful that legal clarity might open the door to reconciliation. Meanwhile, Jerry Only kept the Misfits alive with new members and continued touring and recording under the band’s name. Danzig, focused on his solo career, repeatedly dismissed reunion rumors, citing unresolved tensions with Only. Despite the animosity, fans speculated on a possible reunion every time the two musicians publicly mentioned one another.

By the mid-2010s, nostalgia and fan demand for the classic lineup reached new heights. In 2016, a surprising announcement shocked the punk world: Glenn Danzig, Jerry Only, and longtime guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein would reunite for the first time in over 30 years. Dubbed "The Original Misfits," they headlined Riot Fest in Denver and Chicago that year. These performances were celebrated as historic moments, showcasing the band’s raw energy and horror-punk aesthetic. The reunion not only thrilled die-hard fans but also introduced the Misfits to a new generation.

The period between 2002 and 2016 represents a critical chapter in the Misfits’ legacy, marked by legal battles, fan-driven hope, and eventual reconciliation. The reunion proved that, despite decades of conflict, the shared history of Danzig and Only could triumph in the name of punk rock history.
