This 3D animation shows how colon cancer is removed by a surgical procedure called a sigmoid colectomy. The sigmoid colon is the S-shaped part of the large intestine located just before the rectum.

This procedure is often performed to treat conditions such as diverticulitis (inflammation or infection of small pouches in the colon wall called diverticula), colon cancer, or other diseases that affect the sigmoid colon.

During a sigmoid colectomy, the surgeon makes an incision in the abdomen, accesses the sigmoid colon, and removes the diseased portion. The remaining healthy portions of the colon are then reconnected (colon resection), allowing normal bowel function to resume. In some cases, depending on the condition being treated, the surgeon may need to create a colostomy or ileostomy, which is a surgical opening in the abdomen for waste elimination into a collection bag.

Sigmoid colectomy can be performed using traditional open surgery techniques or minimally invasive methods such as laparoscopic or robotic-assisted surgery, which typically result in shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times compared to open surgery.
