Did you know that the song American Girl by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers spawned an urban legend? The lyrics of the song state, "Well, it was kind of cold that night, She stood alone on her balcony, Yeah, she could hear the cars roll by, Out on 441, Like waves crashin’ on the beach" This led fans to surmise that the song was about a young woman who was a student at the University of Florida, who threw herself off a balcony at the Beaty Towers building in Gainesville. The only problem? The story is completely false. In the book Conversations With Tom Petty, Petty revealed “It’s become a huge urban myth down in Florida. That’s just not at all true." Petty continued: “I was living in an apartment [in Encino] where I was right by the freeway. And the cars would go by...And I remember thinking that that sounded like the ocean to me. I think that must have inspired the lyric.” The song became one of Petty's most memorable.
