Rita Coolidge (born 1945) is an American recording artist. Her father was a traditional Cherokee, while her mother was half Cherokee and half Scottish. To honor her ancestry and promote Native American culture, she formed the music trio Walela. In the 1970s and 1980s, she enjoyed significant success with multiple hits on the pop, country, adult contemporary, and jazz charts, particularly with her well-known songs 'Higher and Higher' and 'We're All Alone.'
Coolidge has a notable story about not receiving songwriting credit for the creative section of Eric Clapton's 'Layla.'
She met Kris Kristofferson by chance on a plane, and they later married, recording several successful duet albums together. In her autobiography, she revealed the challenges she faced in her marriage to Kristofferson, including struggles with alcoholism and emotional abuse. Together, they had one daughter, and after their divorce, she subsequently married twice more.
Coolidge was inducted into the Southern Museum of Music Hall of Fame in 2015.
In 2017, she rekindled a romantic relationship with her former college boyfriend Joe Hutto, and they got married in 2018, moving to Tallahassee.
She has also been active in the visual arts, exhibiting her works.

"We're All Alone" is a song written by Boz Scaggs that became a hit for Frankie Valli in 1976. The following year, it reached the top ten for Rita Coolidge in both the US and the UK.
Coolidge was already familiar with Scaggs, as she had provided backing vocals and arranged and directed other backing singers on his albums, "Moments" and "Boz Scaggs & Band."
