Funk music is a vocal and instrumental dance music genre popularized in the 1970s. Funk combines many musical styles, including jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, soul jazz, gospel, and rock. Funk emphasizes rhythm over melody and harmony, and the repetitive "groove" keeps the dancers moving. Funk originated in the African-American community in the mid-1960s, when musicians created a new form of music that was rhythmic. The word "funky" comes from English and means full of emotion and rhythm.
