Erin Nghe, OCD specialist and Founder and Clinical Director of OCD Set Free, has a message for you today:

You no longer have to downplay your pain.

Just because you didn't have big "T" trauma--maybe you didn't get into a major car accident...maybe you didn't witness someone die before you...maybe you weren't physically or sexually abused...

Just because those things didn't happen to you...It doesn't mean you didn't experience trauma.

Maybe you don't meet the criteria for PTSD. But that doesn't mean you do not deserve to have your pain acknowledged. But you have to be the first person to acknowledge that you were hurt.

You have to be the first person to say, "You know what, maybe they didn't meet my needs when I was younger."

If you don't slow down enough to acknowledge your trauma, then it can cause your OCD symptoms to persist. And it then causes you to continue to feel invalidated.

Don't take the baton and run with what happened--them not acknowledging what they did to hurt you. And then don't take the baton, and beat yourself over the head with it with negative self talk, just because you're having intrusive thoughts.

You're not a monster. You don't deserve to speak to yourself the way OCD speaks to you. You may hear those negative things, but you don't have to internalize them.

You can say and do things to support yourself emotionally. And for goodness sake, acknowledge that you're hurting, and that you deserve to be treated with compassion and love. It has to start with you first!
