In dire situations, look for the heroes. As Garuda Indonesia Flight 200 descended, passenger and Air Force Security Officer Kyle Quinlan knew something was wrong.
With excessive air speed and a steep flight path angle, the jet overshot the runway and burst into flames. Quinlan jumped to action, opened an emergency exit, extinguished a fire blocking an escape, and helped panicked passengers till rescue arrived.
Of the 140 occupants, almost everyone survived this pilot's mistake.
