This is the short story of Rocky Dennis. Rocky Dennis was born with an extremely rare bone dysplasia, causing rapid and abnormal growth of his facial bones. Despite doctors' grim predictions, he defied the odds, living a nearly normal life until his untimely passing at 16, October 4th 1978. Initially healthy, abnormalities surfaced around age two, revealing craniodiaphyseal dysplasia, also known as lionitis. This condition distorted his facial features and caused his skull to double in size, pushing his eyes and nose out of alignment. Despite dire forecasts, Rocky thrived academically and socially, charming classmates with his humor and earning accolades at a summer camp for handicapped children. His mother, Rusty Dennis, fiercely advocated for his inclusion in mainstream education, resisting pressure to segregate him. Despite facing ridicule and medical challenges, Rocky remained resilient, declining surgical interventions to conform to societal norms. His remarkable journey, documented in the biopic "Mask," captivated audiences, although certain artistic liberties were taken. Rocky's legacy endures, a testament to his indomitable spirit and the profound bond with his mother, who believed his energy transcended physical form. One of the most special things about Rocky was his sense of humor. Despite dealing with the gravity of the situation he always managed to smile.
