A mix up of some of my fave tunes from raving in 1988/89/90. The mix goes from 1988 and ends up at the end of 1991. This mix was recorded live on Radioactive one afternoon quite a few moons ago.
These tunes take me back to the days I first took up the decks and started learning to mix in 88 after raving and buying records for a couple of years and falling in love with the music, the parties, and the art of DJ-ing.
Reggae, Dub, Hip Hop & House Music took a big hold of me at that time.
When Acid House started to come through in 1986/87 I was working behind the bar in a local club. At the beginning of each night before the customers would arrive at the club, the resident DJ's in the club would go through their promo records on the decks that were above the dance-floor. If said Dj's did not want any of the promo records they played through, they would throw / frisbee them down onto the dance-floor. I would then quickly scoop them up and take them home with me later. I still have them to this day. They were some of the first House music records I acquired.
These were the days when illegal parties started emerging around the M25. After the night ended at the club I worked at at the time, a large group of us would end up at some great House parties and some of these M25 parties. Others would use the club I worked at as a warm up for The Wag club and the Ministry Of Sound. After the Wag Club and Ministry Of Sound ended they would then end up at the M25 parties.. That's a lot of dancing!
Huge convoys of cars heading to a rave became a common sight on motorways up and down the UK. As always, the tabloids stoked the fires of panic & fear while at the same time they helped promote the subculture, and the parties.
With the police outfoxed, the parties would begin...and then end some days later. The rest is history.
