Not one for recklessly throwing stuff away I wanted to see if I could save the sink that was just inside the front door as it had to be removed because it would be below the new kitchen countertop.

Our house was built some time, we believe, in the 1930s on a street once called 'Rue du Commerce'. It was once a clog shop and the large opening into what is now the sitting room, but would of once been the entrance to the business, quite clearing shows that this, and most of the other properties who still retain their shop fronts, were part of a thriving village in the heart of rural France. These days though all the buildings are houses and the old tired shop fronts just a hint into how busy this little village once was.

The house has two of these 'built in' sinks. One at the front door and one at the backdoor. A simple lead pipe supplied water and the front sink drained into the the quite advanced waste water system, while the back one into a stone trough in the garden. I believe this may have then drained, via a big lead pipe in the cave, down into the waster water system which is located way below ground level and even below the level of the basement.
