The REPUBLIC plays a unique role in Plato's works because this dialogue presents all major themes of its author's philosophy. One of Plato's main concerns in the Republic is the question of justice. In the first book, he sets up the problem following the usual for his early dialogues on the what-is-F procedure. As always, Socrates discusses the what-is-justice issue with his interlocutors by pushing the search for a definition of justice, but he has no satisfactory answer. When talking about the human soul, he comes to the point that "justice is the excellence of the soul, and injustice is the defect of the soul," as well as "the just soul and the just man will live well, and the unjust man will live ill" (353e). In the book IY of the REPUBLIC, Socrates argues that justice in the individual person is each part of his soul doing its own job. In my video presentation, I will discuss and explain his argument for this conclusion.
