The lead moves in all directions thanks to the complex yet straightforward modulations.
Starting with the oscillator, and to keep things simple, I chose to use only oscillator A with the SSQ wavetable.
This will limit the complexity of the patch and give a gritty timbre to the FM. This oscillator will get its pitch modulated by Note on random1 for the classic S&H feel and a triangle LFO set to a rate of a couple of bars to make the modulation glide between the random values. Of course, I won't keep the oscillator centered to mono, so I set the second note on random to modulate the panning of the oscillator.
At this point, I felt that the timbre needed a bit more movement, so I programmed note on random2 to modulate the wavetable position so the timbre will be constantly moving.
The sound we've just created needs some shaping. For that, I directed things to a 12db bandpass filter with a healthy amount of resonance and drive. This filter is being modulated with a note on random1 and the same triangle LFO as the oscillator to ensure a smooth randomized modulation.
To finish the patch, I applied a small amount of downsampling distortion to give it some grittiness in the high end. 🎛️🔊
