1. Inversion Ankle Sprain:
• This is the most common type of ankle sprain.
• It occurs when the foot rolls inward, overstretching or tearing the ligaments on the outer side (lateral) of the ankle, particularly the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL).
• Symptoms include pain, swelling, and bruising on the outer side of the ankle.
• It typically happens during activities like running, jumping, or stepping on uneven surfaces.
2. Eversion Ankle Sprain:
• This is less common but often more severe.
• It occurs when the foot rolls outward, overstretching or tearing the ligaments on the inner side (medial) of the ankle, especially the deltoid ligament.
• Symptoms include pain, swelling, and bruising on the inner side of the ankle.
• It may occur due to high-impact trauma or overpronation of the foot.
Both injuries require rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) as initial treatment. Severe cases might need immobilization, physical therapy, or surgery to repair torn ligaments.
