Resilient Teams E005
A Bit of Security for February 5, 2024
In 1965 Harold Leavitt developed his Diamond Model of dependencies within organizations. He described the relationship between Structure, People, Technology, and Tasks. This is more robust than the commonplace three-sided people/process/technology model since it highlights the interaction of relationships and process over time.
Today we’re going to look a bit at the “people” leg of this triad. Incident response teams have a difficult job – they are like firemen, police, and ambulance crews. While not in mortal peril like police or firemen, the urgency of the task will overwhelm some practitioners, forcing them into untenable roles for the duration of the event. So the first order of business is to make sure the people are trained for the exigencies of a crisis: the pressure, the demands, the modification to organizational reporting relationships and normal tasks, and the response time requirements. The second order of business is to plan a path to resuming business as usual operations. A crisis with no end becomes a toxic lifestyle. People reduced to their last resources will behave like the starving wolfs that we incorrectly modeled as “Alpha Males” – bullying, destructive, uncooperative, and toxic to themselves and others. The cure? Build a resilient workforce – including management – with deep connections between the employees so they can rely on each other and will help each other through the difficult time.
