This video is an introduction to oxidation and reduction reactions, in one word redox reactions. An oxidation and reduction reaction happens when electrons are transferred between atoms. A loss of electrons is called oxidation, atom has become oxidized. A gain of electrons is called reduction, atoms has become reduced.
When oxidation and reduction reactions are separate they are called half reactions. Two half reactions form whole reaction.
Oxidation number, describes degree of oxidation (loss of electrons) of an atom in a chemical compound. They are written above atoms to show whether they are gaining or losing electrons.
