On August 3rd, 1981, nearly 13,000 of America's air traffic controllers went on strike. In response, Ronald Reagan issued a statement from the White House Rose Garden that the striking workers were striking illegally, and that they had 48 hours to return to work or they would be terminated.The majority attempted to call Reagan's bluff, thinking he couldn't possibly fire an entire country's-worth of air traffic controllers due to safety concerns. But he wasn't bluffing.
