Description:
Finland and Estonia are embarking on an ambitious project to construct a tunnel linking their capitals, Helsinki and Tallinn. This groundbreaking tunnel will traverse the Gulf of Finland, which is remarkably shallow with an average depth of just 38 meters. At its narrowest point, the Gulf is only 50 kilometers wide.
The rail line within the tunnel will feature four main stations. The tiny Finnish island of Uppoluoto will be extended, and the shallow Estonian reef of Tallinnamadal will be transformed into an island. The primary aim of this project is to reduce travel time between Helsinki and Tallinn by one and a half hours. Additionally, it will connect Finland to Rail Baltica, an 870-kilometer-long railway that links the Baltic states with Poland and the rest of Europe. This strategic connection will bolster NATO's ability to secure its eastern flank against potential Russian threats.
The estimated cost of this tunnel is 20 billion euros, but as both countries are members of the EU, a portion of the funding will be subsidized by the European Union. Join us as we explore the details and implications of this incredible engineering feat!

Finland and Estonia are planning the construction of a tunnel that will link their capitals: Helsinki and Tallinn. The two countries are separated by the Gulf of Finland which is actually very shallow with an average depth of just 38 meters. At it’s narrowest point, the Gulf of Finland is just 50 kilometers wide.
