The former head of news at Channel 4 has told Sky News that Gregg Wallace is just a 'small part of a bigger problem at the BBC and the media industry as whole.'

Dorothy Byrne said the alleged incidents showed how the corporation treated big name presenters differently from production staff.

Mr Wallace stepped down as a presenter of MasterChef last week following 13 allegations of inappropriate behaviour over 17 years.

He released a video on Sunday morning saying his accusers were a "handful of middle-class women of a certain age".

Ms Byrne said: "Does he think that young women... want to hear rape jokes, want to be quizzed in smutty detail about lesbian sex? Does he think those young women want to have their breasts stared at and hear about his sex life?"

A BBC spokesperson said: “We take any issues that are raised with us seriously, and we have robust processes in place to deal with them. We are always clear that any behaviour which falls below the standards expected by the BBC will not be tolerated.

“Where an individual is contracted directly by an external production company we share any complaints or concerns with that company and we will always support them when addressing them."
