ANCIENT ROME RITUALS

LUPERCALIA

Lupercalia is a pastoral festival of Ancient Rome observed annually on February 15 to purify the city, promoting health and fertility. Lupercalia was also known as dies Februatus, after the purification instruments called februa, the basis for the month named Februarius.

In the archaic Rome, february was the last month of the year, making this period simbolically linked to to the end of a cosmic cycle, and the beginning of a new one, embodying the hope of a return of the golden age.

Lyrics:

"Februa me, faune Luperce, ut sicut sol resurgam. Hiems ad suum finem est ut nunc noctem collustrat"
