He said that he is 70 years old this year and has been trying to find a job but no one wants to hire him.
In this city a lot of the man works by carrying heavy items up and down the stairs. They are able to make it their full time job. They pick up gigs here and there. But this man has been having trouble finding enough gigs. No one wants to be responsible if he ends up falling and breaking his bone.
The man said that he has a wife at home and a child working in the city. He doesn't want his child to be responsible for his parents because it means he has to work extra hours and while he can still move he wants to contributed to the family income. Hence why he hasn't retired.
The woman was empathetic and helped him found a gig soon after and he began work right away. While on the way up hill, the woman offered to help the old man although he tried to talk her out of it. After insisting, she got to experience what doing the job was like and understand how difficult it really is. Other workers upon seeing the sight were amazed. They weren't used to seeing a young woman doing this manual labor.
The old man completed the rest of the job himself. Climbing the stairs one by one. But that was only one gig. The girl managed to secure another gig for him.
Before leaving, she even gave the old man $200 to help out. The old man tried to turn her down but he ultimately accepted the money. The woman hope that he will be able to find more gig in the future.
