The success of his 1976 album "Silk Degrees" significantly raised his profile, as it produced multiple hit songs and marked a major turning point in his career. Notably, the song "Lowdown" won a Grammy Award.
While producing "Silk Degrees," Scaggs selected members of Toto as session musicians, which not only contributed to the formation of the band but also led to ongoing collaborations between them.
In the 1980s, Scaggs took a long break from recording, but he made a comeback in 1988 with the album "Other Roads."
He has continually explored various genres, including jazz and rhythm and blues, expanding his musical boundaries. His albums "But Beautiful" and "Out of the Blues" are part of this experimentation, featuring jazz standards.
Scaggs married Donna Carmella Storniola in 1973, and they had two sons. In 1992, he remarried Dominique Gioia, and in 1996, they relocated to Napa Valley, where they produced wine from a 2.2-acre vineyard. By 2006, Scaggs Vineyard received organic certification. In 2016, he sold the vineyard to Newfound Wines.
In 2017, their home was lost in the Northern California wildfires while they were on tour. Tragically, they lost everything, including the vineyard, their cars, and sentimental items like decades' worth of legal pads and cocktail napkins with lyrics written on them.
