Story points are used to measure an estimate of overall effort required to complete a product backlog or any other work.
When estimating story points, most teams use a predefined set of values that doesn’t include every possible number. For example, powers of two (1,2,4,8,16,…) or fibonacci sequence (1,2,3,5,8,13,…) are utilized. This helps the team to avoid too many unnecessary options which could take more time and bog down the discussion. Typically, the maximum story point which can be assigned is 13. If the team decides more than 13, the story must be broken down into 2 or more stories.
Each team considers a lot of things before estimating the story point that can be taken up in a sprint. This includes the work complexity, amount of work, and the risks.
