From Sinatra to punk - how the music scene developed.
Before rock'n'roll, the popular music charts - pop music - were mostly filled with light entertainment. That all changed when rock'n'roll took the world by storm in the mid-1950s.
By the end of the 1950s the golden age of rock'n'roll was over. The music scenes on both sides of the Atlantic went their separate ways. In the UK the skiffle groups developed into beat groups. In America the music scene fragmented with new music genres, surf music, soul at Motown and Atlantic Records, Phil Spector's wall of sound and new dance crazes.
The British Invasion, 1964 to 1966, saw the US charts dominated by British bands. Then in 1966, the two music scenes came back together with the emergence of rock music, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Doors et al.
In the latter part of the 1960s and early 1970s the music scene continued to develop with psychedelia, prog rock, glam rock and metal. The venues also changed from small clubs to sports stadiums.
In 1975 punk emerged as the antidote to the excesses of stadium rock and 20-minute guitar solos. The music returned to fast, three-minute songs, played in small venues by non-virtuoso musicians.
