President Donald Trump just won the US election and analysts have begun to analyze what his win would mean for Africa. Now, while some African Presidents such as Kenya's William Ruto and Nigeria's Bola Tinubu have sent congratulatory messages to Trump, there is one African President who has chosen a different path. You see, the leaders of Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali have chosen to break away from the West and deepen ties with Russia, Chad has chosen to take advantage of the rivalry between Russia and the West. To be honest, this is a brilliant plan and shows that African leaders can be really smart if they chose to be. But how exactly is Chad taking advantage of the rivalry between Russia and the West? And, what does Trump's win mean for Africa? Let’s find out.
The Sahel is a very important region to the West because of its strategic location in Africa. This feature is why the US built one of its largest and the most expensive bases, Airbase 101, in Niger, a country located in the Sahel. It’s also the reason why France ensured that it had its military forces located in Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad. However, the coup in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso led to the spread of anti-West sentiment which in turn led to French military forces kicked out of these countries. The US was also not spared as Niger ordered the shutdown of the two US bases in the country. These events made Chad the last standing ally of the West in that region. But, if you recall, before the election which restored democratic rule in Chad, the military government in Chad demanded that the US forces stationed in the country withdraw out of the country, which they did. But, after the election which was won by President Deby, Chad agreed for the US forces to return to the country on his terms.
