Today, we're sharing the birth story of our firstborn daughter, Aurelia. This birth was a lesson in adaptability. I had a certain idea of the birth I wanted - natural with no complications or interventions, but over the course of labour, we had to adapt!

Things may have unfolded a bit differently than planned, but it was still a very positive birth experience, and what matters is that Baby Aurelia arrived in this world safe and sound.

👶 Baby’s Birth Story: Our Calgary Labour & Delivery Experience

From early labours to “showtime” pushing, here’s a chronological rundown of what happened when our little Aurelia 🌸 (aka Relly) arrived—just as we lived it. Perfect for anyone curious about labour & delivery in Calgary, epidurals, forceps births, and life’s first postpartum days:

Early Labour at Home (3 Days!)

Contractions began slowly—3–4 min apart—so we tried to stay calm and wait.

Family “practice” with our newborn nephews and nieces helped keep nerves low.

Why Calgary, Not Home Birth

No “proven pelvis”: local clinic couldn’t safely handle first-time natural deliveries.

Chose Calgary (30 min drive) over Lethbridge for sister’s support & larger hospital.

Arrival & Admission (10:15 pm)

Checked into Labour & Delivery: 5 cm dilated, calm energy, bouncy-ball breathing.

First night: 12 h of labour, only a little gas & air—no epidural “by choice.”

Moving to Labour & Delivery Suite

Beautiful private room with city & river-view, mood lighting & family-style vibe.

Nurse team of four (including Dr Fay & resident Dr Christine) kept spirits high.

Epidural Decision

After 12 h and rising pain, we opted for the epidural—95 % relief! 🎉

Allowed much-needed rest: contractions felt like gentle reminders instead of fire.

Final Dilation Check

Cervix at 9.5 cm by early afternoon—time to start gentle pushing.

Two-Hour Pushing “Marathon”

Explored multiple positions (squats, side-lies…), but gravity favoured the classic supine.

Pushing 3 × 10 sec with each contraction—baby’s head stalled behind pubic bone.

Forceps Assist = Game Changer

After 2 h, the on-call obstetrician arrived with confidence & skilled forceps technique.

2 pushes later: Miracle! Baby Aurelia entered the world at 8:45 pm. 💖

Skin-to-Skin & First Latch

Mom caught her own baby; immediate chest-to-chest bonding.

Baby’s first feeding: calm, instinctive latch—100 % bestseller!

Postpartum Highlights

Free hospital “newborn classes” on feeding, diapering & soothing—so valuable!

Overnight “nurse nap”: Relly snoozed at the nurses’ station, we got 2 h blissful rest.

Met other new parents—jaundice, colic struggles—deep gratitude for our chill babe.

Homecoming & Welcoming Committee

Dog To’o greeted Relly with all the sniffing—and gentle tolerance.

First family stroll: baby in arms, parents in awe.

Take-Home Lessons

Adaptability is key: birth rarely sticks to the plan, but teamwork shines through.

No shame in changing course (epidural, forceps)—health & safety first!
