Pathe reporter Bill Symon interviewing Sir Alexander (natural sound). Question: "What has your organisation done to aid research into the question of smoking and lung cancer?" Answer: "Well, in 1954, seven of the leading manufacturers in this country gave a grant of £250,000 for the Medical Research Council".



CU. Bill Symon asking question: "So far what are the conclusions reached by your organisation?" CU. Sir Alexander speaking: "They are given very clearly in the annual report which we just issued, which shows I think, that there is a need for much more research and over a wide area, and in my opinion to single out smoking as a caused agent is on evidence today, completely unjustified." SV. Bill Symon thanks Sir Alexander for his statement, and Sir Alexander asks Bill Symon to have a cigarette.

Bob walks into tobacconists and the assistant takes large packet of cigarettes off shelf and places it on counter and picks up money. CU. Cash register recording 3/10d. CU. Hands pressing down keys of cash register, pan up revealing 2/8d being the tax for the Government.



GV. Whitehall and Government buildings. CU. Name over doorway - Treasury. SV. Interior, Mr Peter Thorneycroft sitting at desk. SCU. Mr Thorneycroft sitting at desk, looking up and into camera (library). SV. Stewart Farrar sitting in chair smoking cigarette and reading headlines on newspaper "Lung Cancer - Cabinet to warns heavy smokers". SV. Front - Stewart Farrar looks at his cigarette, shrugs his shoulders, leans forward to stub his cigarette out, but his hand stops on top of the ashtray. CU. Stewart looking down thinking, as if to say - "Shall I continue to smoke?" CU. The cigarette burning in ashtray. CU. Stewart still thinking, he starts to react, nods his head as if to say - "Yes I'll finish this cigarette" - he continues to smoke.
