ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
After a long eclipse, soul-funk and its blues roots are back in the spotlight. At the forefront of this movement is the Brooklyn-based label Daptone, emanating an organic yet never out-of-touch aesthetic with an extensive catalog featuring the late Sharon Jones, the Budos Band, the Afrobeat gang Antibalas and the rocksteady group The Frightnrs. The French band Malted Milk, equally embodying this comeback, offers a diverse musical panorama that logically comprises rhythm and blues and its many offshoots. In this performance at Les Escales de Saint-Nazaire, the members of Malted Milk exude experience. With a dozen albums and a hundred or so international sets to their name, the Nantes band kicks off their set with “Keep on Drinking,” a track carried by a gleaming brass section. Complemented by Arnaud Fradin's warm vocals, the group transitions from track to track like a well-oiled machine. The rhythm section is present but never intrusive, and the female backing vocals round everything off with finesse. Finally, the cover of “No More Okey Doke,” a song by the Neville brothers' first band The Meters, is a true embodiment of the spirit of New Orleans and its legendary clubs. Highly recommended!
