…and to show them off, these adorable eagle chicks had a little joint wingersizing session Wednesday morning. Throughout the day, both Sunny and Gizmo stepped up to demonstrate their beautiful balance while exercising their wings…well, actually, their almost, perhaps improving balance…well, actually, their fairly tipsy balance as they each had to walk a bit to keep their huge wings from tipping them over…but they are both working hard on it.
With these warm days, Gizmo was first to demonstrate the common eagle horaltic pose, sitting up with wings open, allowing the cooling breeze to flow across their underside. Both Sunny and Gizmo were also panting often. Panting is a normal behavior in eagles because eagles do not have sweat glands like humans do. Similar to dogs, they pant as a usual method of cooling off.
In the midday, Sunny and Gizmo sat down beside each other as if they were having a giant foot showing off competition…and even though Sunny is older and bigger, Gizmo’s feet may have won the competition.
But in the evening, Sunny definitely showed more advanced development with the serious work at eating independently of Jackie’s feeding. While Jackie assisted by continuing to stand on the fish she had been feeding the chicks, Sunny settled in right next to the fish and tugged at it to try to pull pieces off. Gizmo watched first and then tried it out…it looked like their beaks might not be strong enough to tear off actual pieces, but from all the tongue action, it seemed they were both at least getting little tastes.
Then Shadow posed for a nice close-up as he proudly sat tall, protecting his growing babies… and Sunny conveniently stood up beside him to show how big those chicks are getting compared to dad.
Please enjoy watching Gizmo and Sunny grow as fast as possible with all the beakfuls of food they are both receiving from completely dedicated Jackie and Shadow. Thank you for loving it all as much as we do!
