
As long as you can get your parsnip seed to germinate, they are fairly easy to grow. You might need to cover your crop with mesh to keep the carrot root fly out as they can also go for parsnips 😩 but this year I’ve taken the risk and it looks like the hot and dry weather might have helped keep the number down.
Parsnips store well in the ground in the UK until winter (when slugs can be a problem) so I only lift what I need. After pulling the parsnip I form the soil in again around the ones left in the ground.
One important note about parsnip seed, try to always buy fresh and of good quality as carrot and parsnip seed are those with the shortest shelf life. I buy new seed every year because one of my pet hates is poor germination 😆
And like with carrots, for best chance of straight roots it’s best to direct sow your seed straight in the soil.
