Newborns and one month olds are able to turn head and eyes toward off-centered sound sources, suggesting that newborns possess an inborn capacity to orient toward sounds. However, the nature of the auditory stimulus seems to play an important role. Michael Wertheimer (1961) was the first to show auditory orientation in a 3-minutes-old girl. On 18 of in total 52 trials, this girl made an reflexive eye movement toward an off-centered, soft click of a toy cricket. The newborn girl in the present video probably shows on one occasion an eye-head turn (2:42). On about nine of the 28 trials with different sound sources, she seems to respond to the sound with increased alertness or a mouth wrinkle (orienting reflex).
