Mom and dad were at Hmart and saw Korean blue crabs that were actually from Korea so they had to get them. (FYI, Korean blue crabs are slightly different from blue crabs here.) They called me to report the good news(?) and I asked them to get my favorite seafood ever, mideoduck (sea squirt) so we can make kkotgejjim (spicy steamed Korean blue crabs). This is definitely one of my favorite Korean dishes which we used to enjoy a lot back home since we lived by the ocean. It's the most delicious way to enjoy blue crabs. Sea squirts are optional but for those who love them, it elevates the dish with its unique fragrance and flavor. There are a few different species of sea squirts. The one we're using here are more common ones called 'omandae' (meaning it's everywhere). True mideoduck is less common and more expensive. Sea squirts are used for various dishes in the southern shore areas of Korea.
