So, to recap a lot of history to absorb, lets look again at the key points. In North Africa by late 1942 the Germans had been defeated at the Second Battle of El Alamein as General Bernard Montgomery and the British Eighth Army had taken on Hitler’s “Desert Fox”, General Erwin Rommel and won. Montgomery’s determination was equal to anything shown by the Germans to date, as typified on the eve of an earlier battle when he had destroyed all contingency plans for withdrawal, telling his officers “If we are attacked, then there will be no retreat. If we cannot stay here alive, then we will stay here dead”.
It was this remarkable fighting spirit that was beginning to shine through for the Allies, whether fighting in the European or Pacific Theatre of War, that was making all the difference. The tide was fast turning against Hitler.
