As a child I was somewhat seduced by the splendor of French interior design. It's many faces never fail to impress without being over the top and unnecessarily pretentious.French design ages well and is appreciated across the globe. The Baroque, Regency, Rococo, French Chic and Art Deco periods have found homes in many high standard apartments, homes and offices.
Many French styles are about simplicity with a touch of glamour added by matching gilded table lamps or hand crafted furniture. A light, bright and delicate room with carefully chosen palatial details. The symmetry and harmony and subtle shades invite you in with a fresh and airy feel.
When we were looking to buy a renovation property we looked at over 60 houses. Yet, none of them displayed interiors to be proud of. The house we purchased was a club house of fashion faux-pas. A previous occupant had flock wallpapered the ceiling and skirting boards. They had applied lino floor tiles to the hand made mahogany door and painted the bespoke plaster coving lime green and pink.
Our house is a rural farmhouse, therefore many French styles would be more suited to Parisian apartments or Chateaux. However, there is nothing stopping us from using a mish-mash of Louis XV furniture, Art Deco lamps, returning the walls to natural exposed stone and having the chestnut roof beams on show.
This Bedroom had been abandoned for 30 years before we began restoring it. Previously, bees and pine martins had been living in the ceiling and the walls had started collapsing. The chimney had started to collapse with smoke penetrating the walls and water pouring down through the ceiling. This quick re-decoration had turned into a mission to save an entire corner of the house.
