Passion, drama, emotion and virtuosity – what more could you want from the opening concert to Colston Hall’s brand new classical season? The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, appearing no less than five times this season, performs a programme with Walton’s tense and dark First Symphony at its heart, the composer in turmoil after the end of a love affair. It’s restless, volatile music. But somehow, through the emotional fog, Walton emerges defiant and triumphant.

And there’s plenty of triumph, too, in Tchaikovsky’s 1875 virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 1, with its big tunes and rich orchestrations, played by the South Korean pianist Sunwook Kim. Piano Concertos don’t get much more stirring than this one.
