A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

…wait that’s the caption for the other Scribble Jam video.

This clip surfaced on IG the other day, here’s the HQ (not sure if the clarity makes it look better or worse 😂). And to give it some context:

I invented this character on the road as a DJ with my rap homies as a way to “Justify” cutting up pop records in my showcase interludes at underground rap shows. At the time, I was DJing a lot of club nights at home, but also producing & performing with underground rap groups.

I kept the two worlds separate for the most part, but while going through a box of promo 12” I got from the majors, I heard this JT record that had incredible break drums that I felt would work well for hip-hop heads, in spite of it being the lead singer of N-SYNC’s single. Of course, it was the name “The Neptunes” that made me check it out — they were running the clubs along with Timbaland at that time.

In the same promo box, I came across a Blackstreet acapella at the end of a 12” that sounded ripe for scratches. Tried it out, and it fit great.

I tested it out at some parties (sans mullet) and the routine really connected. Uptempo and interesting. It kind of took a while for the JT song to hit so that worked in my favour for keeping my underground credentials, but by the time I hit the road with the rap groups, it had blown up and I felt I needed to add a little jazz to the presentation to explain my choices.

I found a mullet wig while digging for records at a thrift shop in Flagstaff, AZ near the start of the tour. When the van picked me up, I was sporting it, and the “DJ Mullet” character was born.

We had a lot of fun on that tour, and 20 shows later the routine/schtick was pretty polished. Tour ended, and the next thing on my underground hip-hop schedule was Scribble Jam and the DJ battle that came with it. I went to Cincinnati again (2 years after dropping the Star Wars routine at the same place), and entered the battle. I brought the wig in case I felt it was appropriate to bring out at any moment, and when the final came around, I felt it was appropriate. The rest is what you see in this video.

Don't forget to have fun!
