
Many of the new entries coined by Gen Z and Gen Alpha’s internet slang, one word in particular has a long-standing history within the LGBTQ+ community and drag culture: "lewk."
The new entry reads: “a particular style, fashion, or outfit (= a set of clothes worn together), especially one that is unusual and impressive”
According to Colin McIntosh, the Lexical Programme Manager at the Cambridge Dictionary, these words were chosen for their "staying power" and are an example of how internet culture is changing the English language.
For the LGBTQ+ community, the recognition of a word like "lewk" is not just a language update, it's a validation of queer culture's influence on the world.
