Anticipation is a difficult thing to navigate. When something has been built up in the collective hearts and minds of the culture over a number of years, the prospect of actually living up to it is no easy task. For starters, when we’re left in the dark, humans have a tendency to let their imaginations run rampant. Next up, there’s the fact that we are all susceptible to the marketing machine. And Finally, there’s the issue of our own social media echo chambers. Whether negative or positive, the likes of Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit means that our own snap judgments on a record can suddenly be reinforced and allow opinions to be cemented long before we’ve really given something ample time to be digested.
One album that definitely bore the brunt of each of these scenarios is Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.
