In his treatise DE ANIMA or ON THE SOUL, Aristotle claims that "the soul is the first actuality of a natural body which has life potentially" (412a27-28). In my presentation, I explain this claim and the consequences that Aristotle thinks it has for deciding whether a given soul can exist separately from its body.
