Melingo, Macha and el Bloque Depresivo

Buenos Aires and Valparaiso: from port to port with Melingo, Macha and Bloque Depresivo and the special participation of Quatuor Wassily.

Whether in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Veracruz or Valparaiso, the major ports of Latin America have always been high meeting places where rhythms and melodies of the most varied origins mingle - music that the musicians of lupanars have traditionally eagerly to reinterpret in their own way. This is often how new styles were born, sometimes destined to become the emblematic music of their respective ports, such as the tango or the cueca. Porteños pays homage to two of the largest port cities in South America: Buenos Aires and Valparaiso. Two towns where the inhabitants officially recognize themselves as porteños. Two cities that combine city pride with a public taste for local music mixed with imports. Born in Buenos Aires, MELINGO is a sort of cubist tango poet. His grave and rocky voice is more reminiscent of Tom Waits than Carlos Gardel, and that is perhaps precisely why he is one of the musicians best able to represent the modernity of a tango that is always urban and always evolving. Classical clarinetist, then converted rock singer-guitarist, Melingo rediscovered the tango of his hometown about fifteen years ago. During his five records, he reinvented a personal tango nourished by the history of Buenos Aires. Bloque Depresivo is the new band of Aldo Asenjo (aka MACHA) leader and singer of the Chilean cult band Chico Trujillo. Deeply rooted in the culture of Valparaiso, the repertoire of Bloque Depresivo is nourished by port classics and compositions by Macha which express a despair reinterpreted with the perverse Happiness of poets whose pain is a priesthood to share. Waltzes, ballads and boleros come together – to the delight of the Chilean public, which seems to know no greater joy than crying their pain at the top of their voices.
