This song was first performed in "Darktown Follies", which opened at the Lafayette Theatre in Harlem in 1911 or 1913, depending on the source. "Ballin' the Jack" introduced a popular dance of the same name.
First recording by Prince's Band way back in 1914. They had the biggest hit with their version.
Kid Ory however was one of the first who sang the lyrics.
