"Good Vibrations" is a song by the American rock band the Beach Boys, composed by Brian Wilson with lyrics by Mike Love. Released as a single in 1966, it was an immediate critical and commercial success, topping the charts in several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. Known for its complex soundscapes, episodic structure, and unconventional approach to pop music, it was the most expensive single ever recorded at the time. Today, "Good Vibrations" is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential songs of the rock era.
Produced by Wilson, the title came from his fascination with "cosmic vibrations." As a child, his mother told him that dogs sometimes bark at people because they sense "bad vibrations." Wilson expanded on this idea to explore extrasensory perception, while Love's lyrics were influenced by the emerging Flower Power movement. The song was written during the recording process, much like other works from Wilson's Smile sessions. Originally intended for the unreleased Smile album, the track instead appeared on the Beach Boys' 1967 album, Smiley Smile.

The creation of "Good Vibrations" was groundbreaking. Building on techniques he had developed for Pet Sounds, Wilson recorded a series of short, modular musical fragments at four different Hollywood studios between February and September 1966. This process resulted in the song's dramatic shifts in key, texture, instrumentation, and mood. The sessions consumed over 90 hours of tape, with production costs estimated in the tens of thousands of dollars. The band's publicist, Derek Taylor, famously described the track as a "pocket symphony." The song revolutionized studio recording techniques, paving the way for pop experimentation and the rise of psychedelic and progressive rock. Featuring an innovative mix of instruments—including the jaw harp and Electro-Theremin (a theremin-like instrument)—"Good Vibrations" sparked renewed interest in theremins and synthesizers.

In 1967, "Good Vibrations" earned a Grammy nomination for Best Vocal Group Performance and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1994. It was voted number one in Mojo's "Top 100 Records of All Time" and ranked number six on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" lists in 2004 and 2010, later being re-ranked at number 53 in the 2021 edition. The song also earned a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll."

Over the years, "Good Vibrations" has been recognized as a precursor to iconic songs such as the Beatles' "A Day in the Life" 1967 and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" 1975.
