While watching Trump win the 2025 presidency a couple of weeks ago and observing the online left’s reaction to this occurrence, I began wondering how I would explain this very idealistic, young (and slightly unhinged) political niche to people in my everyday life. Sure, I could tell them that [online] leftists are opposed to capitalism and lean into more socialist/ communist/ anarchist economic structures, but that’s not normally how we [Americans] describe political groups. Instead, we typically rely on the group’s, or party’s, general policy stances and reputation. Rather than relying on the postulations of traditional political theory or true-to-life left wing organizations, I want to deal in a more abstract form of analysis when pinpointing what the online left is, and what the strengths and weaknesses of this ambiguous group are.
