In an exclusive interview with New Age Business magazine, Nishat Mazumder, the first Bangladeshi woman to conquer Mount Everest in 2012, recently spoke with Staff Correspondent Kamrun Nahar Sumy, discussing the concerns of women and girls travelling alone, as well as those aspiring to undertake expeditions, whether within the country or abroad, with a particular emphasis on safety and security.
Nishat Mazumder explored the safety concerns faced by girls and women, highlighting the societal perceptions that persistently affected their experiences.
Drawing from her own experiences, Nishat addressed the overarching issue of safety for women in various aspects of life, stating that the question of safety pertained not only to travel but also to their daily lives, whether at home or work. She candidly expressed that, often, she herself did not feel entirely safe.
Discussing the complexities that women and girls encounter during travel, the Everest conqueror highlighted the myriad considerations that often come into play, such as assessing the destination, travel companions, and the timing of the journey. She noted, ‘These considerations are frequently driven by a pervasive sense of insecurity that accompanies women travellers.’
Nishat also touched upon the persistent feelings of insecurity that continued to affect women, even as more of them actively participated in the job market and embarked on solo or group travel adventures.
She attributed this insecurity to society’s perception of women, emphasising the need to view women as equals—fellow human beings—rather than just as ‘women’.
She argued, ‘Such a shift in perspective would naturally alleviate many of the challenges women face.’
Nishat Mazumder acknowledged the vulnerability of young women, noting that their emotional tenderness could make them more susceptible to manipulation.
She emphasised that societal change must encompass how society views and treats girls and women to create an environment of equality and empowerment.
