American soul singer and songwriter Minnie Julia Riperton was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 8, 1947. She was the youngest of eight children to a housekeeper mother and pullman porter father. Her vocal talent was evident right from the start. At around two or three years of age, she’d even ask her parents if she could perform for guests that came to the house.
Singing wasn’t her only talent though. Minnie, along with her siblings, would also take classes at their local performing arts centre in modern dance, drama as well as music. She also studied operatic vocal training there, learning to practice breath control, holding vowels for extended times and perfecting enunciation. The dedication paid off as she would later be known for having an angelic 5 octave voice. Her teacher pushed her to study at Chicago's Junior Lyric Opera, but the siren call of soul, rock and R&B was much stronger.
