On 26 November 1984, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher gave the second Carlton Lecture at Conservative Party's Carlton Club in London. Titled "Why Democracy Will Last", Thatcher's speech set out what she believed to be the political and economic threats to democratic freedom, and how they should be overcome. She referenced the ongoing miners' strike, arguing that militant unions sought to impose the wishes of a minority on the majority of working people. And, referencing the ongoing conflict in Northern Ireland, she denounced "terrorist gangs" within the UK's borders. Later on, in an interview with Alastair Burnet, Thatcher expanded on the themes of her lecture.
