From bedroom vlogs captured on webcams to billion-view productions with global influence - YouTube has transformed not just how we tell stories - but who gets to tell them.
As YouTube celebrates its 20th anniversary, PinkNews explores a story that too often goes untold: the powerful role LGBTQ+ creators played in shaping YouTube’s legacy. YouTube has long been a platform for positive change - one that’s amplified marginalised voices and provided creators with the space to share their experiences, build community, and reach millions.
In this mini-documentary, PinkNews sits down with some of the YouTube’s most influential LGBTQ+ voices, including Joey Graceffa, one of the first to open up about his journey with millions, Rose and Rosie, who shared the highs and lows of queer love, life, and parenthood, and Jazz Jennings, whose visibility helped reshape conversations around gender identity.
In it’s early years YouTube wasn’t just a platform the site became a place where LGBTQ+ people could see themselves reflected, connect with others, and build a sense of community in a world in which they often felt misunderstood. As the platform evolved and its influence grew the impact YouTube has had on LGBTQ+ lives - both on and off the screen - is undeniable.
Youtube as a platform has fostered a community where anyone, regardless of their identity or background, can find connection and belonging.
For the LGBTQ+ community, this sense of belonging has been especially powerful.
It’s given us the chance not just to be seen, but to be heard - and celebrated for who we truly are.
