
In 2021, Victoria, in Australia's South East, experienced a magnitude 5.9 earthquake, which very unexpectantly occurred, rattling the state, causing some structural damage, and injuring one man, but more then that, it showed all of Victoria, and Australia, that we are still very much tectonically active, even though Australia is located in the middle of a massive tectonic plate, known as the Indo-Australian Tectonic plate.
So how does a relatively tectonically stable continent experience an earthquake of this magnitude?
Well, the cause of the earthquake comes instead from a very unlikely source over 2000 kilometers away, in New Zealand. Yup, that's right. New Zealand. The massive tectonic collisions that are occurring here, and that are ultimately responsible for forming the massive New Zealand alps, are actually transferring some of that compressive stress west beneath the Tasman sea and into Victoria in Australia, where it is reactivating ancient fault lines that are over 400 million years old, causing them to slip and create earthquakes in an area that most people thought they wouldn't occur within.
This means Australia and New Zealand are intimately connected. And the geological history of Victoria, both in the past, and in the future, is tied to what is happening in New Zealand, which is just unbelievably fascinating to me.
