A tribute the omnipresence of Amiri-touching the lives of us all with his beautiful figurations. All that we thought we wanted, wanted to become yet were not allowed (by ourselves or others) to become, hated, and loved about our 'selves' was confronted in his works. Lots of Baraka's confrontations come to mind as a person from the deep south migrating to the north in search of the great freedom referred to in the American Dream ideal. From racism to self-hatred to entitlement and appropriation, the words expressed by Amiri cut like southern knives in the gut, bombs in churches, blacks hanging from trees, bystanders blinded by tear gas and power-hosed off of their feet, and a more subtle northern indifference to your abilities versus your upbringing.Does it actually exist outside of my mind? Are caste and class set in stone? Baraka gives you such queries to chew on whether you live by letter or experience. Amiri lived by both.
