Some time round 2006 we put on a rave in South London with Digital Mystikz... At this point they'd only just started dropping their own tunes and it was a great time to watch them DJ - there weren't really enough records being made then that fit the sound they wanted to play, so Mala was running these amazing b-side dubs of Greensleeves 12"s from the 80s, pitching them up or down and drawing out the basslines - it made it clear how much the sound evolved from reggae culture, something that ended up being lost as Dubstep blew up worldwide. I was thinking about that rave the other day, and decided I should pull together a mix of the vinyl I started picking up round then, exploring the early phase of dubstep back when the genre was built from hypnotic loops, chasms of delay, ocean deep subs and spacious, meditative grooves... hope u enjoy!
